Luminaries

I was offered a show in January, 2010 at Art at the Main. The library space is pretty dim during the gallery stroll in January. That was the inspiration to make luminaries. I have been very pleased with the response to them and still enjoy exploring the mix of light, shadow, and ceramics. Currently, I am settled on three basic designs: small simple luminaires, larger altered luminaries, and lamps.

Small Luminaries

My small luminaries are a thrown bowl with patterns cut into the side. They conform to my idea of a typical luminary. I didn't expect to like these as much as I do. They are simple and elagent. It is fun to try new patterns. Currently, I have settled on two patterns that I really like: Fern and Snow Flower. These are about 5" wide and a little over 3" tall. They sell for $20.

Altered Luminaries

These luminaries are a little larger, about 7" tall and 6-7" wide. I throw a larger shape that is between a bowl and a vase. I cut and carve the petals and curve back the sepals. They sell for $40

Lamps

The name for my show at Art at the Main was "Winter Lights." I wanted to make a lamp that captured winter and lights at the same time. I made these sculptures of ice caves and lit them with color changing LEDs. The result was an aurora borealis in the caves that extends out into a dim room. These are plug in lamps, night lights, light shows? I really don't know how to describe them. Instead, I have included a photo and a small short movie. These sell for $150-175. I will be working on additional designs of lamps. Prices will vary.
